Description
4.5MM Stainless Steel BBs – BALLISTIC (x5000)
The 4.5MM Stainless Steel BBs – BALLISTIC (x5000) are steel BBs suitable for use with any compatible BB-shooter, such as an air pistol or a smooth-bored air rifle. This item comes in a bottle of 5000.
BB guns are a type of air gun designed to fire spherical projectiles similar to shot pellets of approximately the same size. Modern BB guns usually have a barrel with a bore and caliber of 4.5 mm (0.177 in) and are available in many varieties. BB shot for modern BB guns is usually steel, plated either with zinc or copper to resist corrosion, and measure 4.3 to 4.4 mm (0.171 to 0.173 in) in diameter. Some manufacturers still make lead balls of slightly larger diameter which are generally intended for use in rifled BB gun barrels.
What follows below is a very brief introduction and overview about types of guns and projectiles. Ultimately, classifications of the types and sizes of projectiles are primarily intended to guide hunters about what ammunition type and size best suit hunting different game. Nevertheless, some basic clarification for our customers may just come in handy.
What is a “BB”?
Note that the term BB refers to a particular size of spherical shot, not a “type of thing”. It was one size from a range of size-classifications of ball shot – other sizes being “B”, “BBB”, “OO”, “T”, “F” and even others designated with “numbers” such as “No.9”, to “No.1”. Hence “BB” is one size from a list.
Shotguns use a variety of sizes of steel or lead shots (balls) packed in a shell. The term “BB” is derived from one shot grade used in shotgun shells, namely “BB grade (.18 cal) lead shot”. As time went on, BB balls were also used with slingshots, air rifles, and eventually even airsoft guns. Hence the term evolved from a “size” to a general term used for spherical steel projectiles. Today, .177 caliber (4.5mm) steel shot is the primary “BB” ammo.
BB is commonly confused with the term “Ball Bearing”, but a better term to use for it is “Ball Bullet”. Since size BB shots are most typically used for shooting small and medium-sized birds, BB shots are also called “Birdshot.” In fact, the various sizes of spherical metal ammunition used in Shotguns (and now more widely applied) are sometimes classified into groupings such as “Leadshot sizes”, “Steelshot sizes” and “Buckshot sizes”.
The nomenclature and groupings of shot sizes can differ from region to region though. Size “BB” may have a different technical meaning on different shot-size tables. The US system clusters lead and steel ball-shot together with “No12 to “No1” and codes “B”, “BB”, “BBB” and “T”. “Birdshot” is classified as sizes “4”, “3”, “2”, “1” and sizes “0”, “00” and “000”. In these systems, generally the smaller the shot number (code), the larger the shot size. For example, shot sizes “0” and “000” are larger than shot sizes “4” or “3”.
Air guns shoot BBs
In the primary sense, a BB is a solid spherical steel projectile for use with a shotgun. Nowadays many types of guns and rifles, and very commonly also gas-powered shooters, discharge BBs. Air guns use a variation of power sources. These range from Single Shot devices to Manual Pump pneumatic, Variable Pump, CO2 Powered, Break Barrel / Spring Piston, Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP), semi-automatic and Full-automatic.
Please note that “BBs” also refers to plastic projectiles in the 6mm to 8mm diameter range – used for airsoft games. Most spring airsoft guns, automatic-electric-gun (AEG) airsoft guns, or gas-powered airsoft guns shoot BBs.
When it comes to which device discharges what projectile, the use context will indicate the applicability of 4.5MM Stainless Steel BBs – BALLISTIC (x5000).
Which is applicable, BBs or Pellets?
Pellets are normally used in long-barrelled air rifles, not BBs. It is important know the differences between an air rifle, also called a pellet gun, and a BB gun. Even though the term “pellet” is often used interchangeably with “BBs”, these projectiles are strictly speaking not the same.
Pellets typically consist of soft metal alloys of lead or bismuth, whereas BBs consist of harder but lighter solid plated metals. BBs are ball shot, whereas pellets come in all sorts of shapes, depending on their intended use and desired flight characteristics. As a user chooses a gun for a particular application, e.g., target practice versus culling small vermin, so the projectile.
Note that some guns can discharge both BBs and pellets. However, only use BBs in a pellet gun / air rifle with a smooth bore, else the BBs might get stuck and mar the weapon. Always do thorough research before applying any new ideas.
An air gun is not a firearm
Please bear in mind that a BB gun is not a firearm. Pellet guns / air rifles use compressed gas, springs, or electric motors to discharge the BB, not combustion, aka “fire”. Even though a BB air gun may look very realistic, these are not suited to self-defense in a one-on-one situation.
Police or military all over the world employ specialised air guns and Pellet Guns for non-lethal crowd control. For personal use though, air rifles such as BB guns and pellet guns are good mainly for recreational or training purposes.
Choose right for recreation and training
Either get a BB gun and shoot BBs or get an air rifle and shoot pellets.
In general, choose an air rifle for higher-velocity shooting, for its accuracy and power over longer ranges. For plinking around, training youngsters and shooting small vermin at close range, choose a BB gun. Steel BBs and BBs in general are common and cheap.
All that remains now is to select a suitable air gun with the 4.5MM Stainless Steel BBs – BALLISTIC (x5000). Then the field is yours and your scope of exploration unlimited!
Enjoy your hobby!
WARNING
Normally, a BB gun or pellet gun will not be able to kill you. But both of them are powerful enough to cause serious damage and fatalities occurred in some rare instances. Children must never handle air guns without supervision, only with extreme care. A BB can cause serious damage to the eyes; therefore eye-protection is always advised, especially when shooting at short range.
